On Thursday, September 22nd, with 100 copies of “Removing the Rose Colored Glasses: Youth Advocates Speak” in hand, GoodBookery staff and Creator Marie Daniels joined the book’s Contributors and a crowd of supporters to acknowledge the hard work and long hours that culminated to create GoodBookery’s very first title. Thanks to the efforts of host Tatiana Xenelis of Prudential Northwest, we celebrated this historic moment in style.

During the event, contributors introduced themselves and shared the experiences that motivated them to contribute to the book. Mary Duncan — who traveled to Portland from Gastonia, North Carolina to celebrate her contribution — shared her story of working with a young woman who lived a troubled childhood struggling with mental illness. Many contributors discussed the passion that drives them to continue their work with youth, even through difficult and frustrating situations.

Through their pioneering efforts, creator Marie Daniels and the 17 contributors to “Removing the Rose Colored Glasses” were truely and inspiration to the event attendees. We received three inquires from attendees who want start their own collaborative books!

Sales from Thursday’s event, as well as future sales of “Removing the Rose Colored Glasses”, benefit Free Arts NW, a local organization committed to helping youth in need through art. Executive Director Kris Bella attended and spoke about the organizations efforts to change the lives of Portland youth through artistic expression. A slideshow highlighted the inspiring work of young people in Free Arts NW’s programs.

GoodBookery would like to thank Creator Marie Daniels, Contributors, supporters, as well as Tatiana Xenelis and Kris Bella, for celebrating this moment in GoodBookery’s history.

Guest post by Mike Russell of Pivotal Writing. If you’ve been disciplined about being undisciplined, written everything that comes to mind, and restrained your inner-editor, you should now have two or three times as much content as you’ll end up needing. Bravo for flow! Now’s the time to reward your internal editor and arm him or [...]

Guest post by Mike Russell of Pivotal Writing. If you don’t write more than emails regularly, you might assume that you must mimic professional, authoritative writing styles you’re used to seeing in traditional formats: textbooks, newspapers, and magazines. In these cases, journalism and academia use a staid, reserved voice to achieve an objective tone and imbue [...]

The Seven-Step Writing Process: Brain Dump

Guest post by Mike Russell of Pivotal Writing. First drafts never see the light of publication. Once you’ve mulled everything over, passed your thoughts by a friend, and honed your outline, it’s time to write! You know what you want to say (more or less), so put that outline away and start typing. “But what about [...]

The Seven-Step Writing Process: Outline and Plan

Guest post by Mike Russell of Pivotal Writing. An outline is just like a recipe: “follow these steps, and you’ll end up with a tasty product”. As with food, the finished result depends on the quality of the recipe. If the directions are vague, or the measurements imprecise, you won’t have a clear idea of what [...]

That’s the title of my presentation at the upcoming SHIFT 6, which takes place Thursday, April 21st at EcoTrust here in Portland, Oregon. SHIFT is AIGA Portland‘s biannual sustainable design event, asking the question: “What does sustainable design mean to you?” In my presentation, I’ll show how collaborative books, which GoodBookery helps people publish, redefine the book [...]
